September 21, 2021

PASADENA, Calif. The Charles Huang Foundation has made a $70 million USD (£50 million GBP) grant to The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.  This donation from alumnus  Charles Huang PhD is the largest gift Strathclyde has ever received.  It is also the biggest single donation to any Scottish university, and among the most generous made to any British university.

Dr Charles Huang, Founder and Chairman of the Foundation and Professor Sir Jim McDonald, the University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor jointly signed the landmark grant agreement at a ceremony held on the Strathclyde campus. Dr Huang also presented a £10m cheque to the University for the first installment of the grant during the ceremony.

£30m of this transformational gift will fund the construction of a new technology and innovation building in the heart of the Glasgow City Innovation District and named after Dr Charles Huang.  The remaining £20m will enable the creation of the Stephen Young Institute for International Business, the Stephen Young Global Leaders Scholarship Programme, and the Stephen Young Entrepreneurship Awards all celebrating the impact that Strathclyde made on Dr Huang’s career and business success. The gift also commemorates the University’s former marketing department head Professor Stephen Young, Dr Huang’s supervisor and mentor during his PhD studies, who sadly passed away in August before this historical event.

"I came to the University of Strathclyde for my MBA in August 1988 under a scholarship from the British Council for international students and I'm forever grateful of the UK for that life-changing opportunity.  This gift is to show my gratitude to Strathclyde and to support those who have yet to embark on their studies."

Professor Sir Jim McDonald said: "We are incredibly grateful to Dr Charles Huang for this exceptionally generous gift. A donation of this scale will make a huge difference to our students, our research, and our innovation. The University of Strathclyde has been transforming lives for more than 200 years and to see one of our own return to support future generations is a very significant moment."

Professor Young's daughter, Juliette Young, said "We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to the Charles Huang Foundation for remembering our father in this way."
