Dr. Huang created his private equity firm Pasaca Capital Inc. in Los Angeles in 2016. It has quickly achieved great success and grown to several billion dollars in less than 5 years.  Right after his business success, Dr. Huang created his private philanthropic foundation, the Charles Huang Foundation to honor his commitments to developing higher education, protecting human health and promoting innovation as a driver for growth globally.

In making this donation, Dr. Huang said, “The Chinese Hospital is the kind of institution I want to support the most. It has an excellent tradition of caring for the local community, especially those less privileged groups. Education and Healthcare have always been the top priorities of my Foundation. This is also why, after making significant donations to my two alma maters in the UK and China, I chose the Chinese Hospital of San Francisco as the recipient of my first charitable donation in the US.

Dr. Huang added, “during the pandemic, we have witnessed, anti-Asian, particularly anti-Chinese sentiment in the American society. I hope that my donation can also show the American society that Asian Americans, in particular Chinese Americans, do care about our communities, give back to our communities in order to make our communities better and stronger.”

The donation will fund the redevelopment of the hospital outpatient tower infrastructure to lead the way in creating innovative programs that meet the health care needs of the Community. The renovated building will be named as “Charles Huang Foundation Outpatient Tower” with more capacity and services, including addition of new subacute care beds and mental health programs, addressing chronic shortages in the San Francisco area, new surgical suites, nutrition services, as well as laboratory and administrative improvements.

Dr. Jian Zhang, the CEO of the Chinese Hospital said, “With this generous gift, the Chinese Hospital will be able to expand much-needed services for local community and San Francisco at large.  We are most grateful to Dr. Huang for his generosity.”  Mr. Kitman Chan, Chairman of the Chinese Hospital’s Board of Trustees, added, “This remarkable gift from Dr. Charles Huang will enable our Chinese Hospital to expand the breadth of outstanding health care services offered to the community.

About the Chinese Hospital

San Francisco Chinese Hospital is a hospital in San Francisco and the only Chinese hospital in the United States.   The hospital is located in San Francisco's Chinatown.  The Chinese Hospital’s roots trace back 123 years to 1899 when the Chinatown community opened the Tung Wah Dispensary to provide Eastern and Western medicines for Chinese immigrants who were unable to access mainstream healthcare facilities.   Three factors that made it difficult for early Chinese immigrants to seek medical care: many hospitals refused to treat Chinese patients; most hospitals were distant from Chinatown, and prospective patients were subject to attack en route; and most Chinese immigrants did not have sufficient knowledge of English to communicate with American doctors.

Chinese Hospital primarily serves the elderly, poor and immigrants from China in the San Francisco area. The hospital's staff can provide services spoken in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishanese and other languages.
